Know when your getting a great deal in a supermarket: by Marc Lockley, author of How To Pay Less For More

The Guardian published findings today stating that the majority of price cuts that Asda and Tesco made in the run up to Christmas were only 1pence.

This disappointing finding is something that, as consumers, we need to be more aware of. Retailers will often show colourful and impactful signs saying ‘sale’, ‘BOGOF’ and ‘limited offer’ to entice us to buy – and it works! In the majority of instances they stay within the OFT’s rulings; many being genuine offers, but some stretching the rules to the limits.

Savvy supermarket shopping can often save you between 25 and 50% on your weekly food bill. Many households spend in excess of £500 per month on food and general domestic items, so this could save you up to £3000 a year!

A starting point to making sure you get the genuine best deals would be to have a micro-list in your purse or wallet of some regular items you buy with the best price achieved written in pencil (alongside an approximate regular price). When a great offer comes up, take advantage of it. If you use a product regularly and have the storagae space, buy in bulk – when you know it is a  genuine 2 for 1 offer, the saving you will make is better than any savings account. It goes without saying only do this if you have the money available, as it’s counter-productive to spend beyond your means.
